Crowns
- If a tooth is severely decayed, heavily filled, broken or brittle, the enamel becomes fragile like an egg shell. Teeth in this vulnerable state can crack and splinter at any point in time.
- If a tooth looks like it could splinter and break, the dentist may suggest that a crown be placed on the tooth.
- This is a painless procedure that usually takes two visits.
- The initial appointment involves removing a small portion of enamel and dentine. An impression is then taken.
- A temporary crown is made for you to wear.
- The impression is then sent to a specialist ceramics laboratory, where your new custom made crown is constructed to appear as an exact replica of a healthy tooth.
- The crown is then cemented over and onto the remaining tooth structure. (Hence the commonly used word for a crown "a cap"). Once completed, it should be both functionally and aesthetically in harmony with the rest of the mouth.
